Gary Numan played the final show of his US tour last night in front of a packed house at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles (it was his second consecutive sold out performance at the venue). Marking the 30th anniversary of his classic Pleasure Principle album – which features the seminal electro tracks “Cars” and “Metal” – Numan played the bulk of the album in the first half his set before exchanging his keyboard for a guitar and launching into newer material.
“I don’t really like retro things at all really,” Numan confessed to SuicideGirls in a recent interview conducted just prior to his US tour. Though initially reluctant to perform so many tracks from his back catalog, Numan came to terms with his past during a highly successful series of UK dates dedicated to The Pleasure Principle album in 2009.
“It surprised me, I actually quite enjoyed it,” said Numan. “I think because it was a mix, the first part of the show was this particular album, which I have sort of grown to be more proud of than I was when I actually released it, and then there was new stuff after that. It felt like it was almost like a documentary set of where you were and where you are, so it didn’t feel entirely nostalgic and retro, which I was grateful for.”
