SoCal ganja rappers Kottonmouth Kings are celebrating 4/20 by doing a lot more than rolling up; They’re rolling out a 6-track EP entitled Legalize It, taking preorders for their eleventh studio album, Sunrsie Sessions (out July 19), and are launching a brand new interactive Stonetown website at KottonmouthKings.com, which will take visitors on a trip through a Disneyland-style virtual theme park devoted to cannabis culture.
We checked in with frontman Brad X to find out more.
SuicideGirls: What does 4:20 mean to you?
Brad X: 420 means freedom and renewal, and is a reminder to light up a fatty. It’s also is the universal sign of unity, positivity and understanding.
SG: If you were President, what would your policy on the green stuff be?
BX: To decriminalize, reduce the schedule it is now so it’s equal to alcohol and tobacco. I would keep 18 as the age limit. If you can go fight in a war, you can decide to light one up. And I would paint the White House green, invite all the world leaders for a spiritual summit – a massive worldwide smoke out – and come out with a peaceful planet.
SG: The disparity between federal and state laws is causing a lot of confusion right now, and resulting in some unfair and bizarre prosecutions. There’s numerous examples of this, but is there an incident relating to this that sticks out in your mind?
BX: There are so many grey areas with the marijuana laws. Call 1 800 420 LAWS and attorney Bruce Margolin will send you a nationwide book of every state and federal law. I have heard too many stories of people getting in trouble because they didn’t clearly understand the laws.
SG: Beyond your music, which obviously carries a “Legalize It” message, how are you involved in the campaign to decriminalize marijuana use?
BX: Lou Dog our drummer is the assistant director for the Los Angeles chapter of NORML. He also works alongside criminal defense lawyer Bruce Margolin, who has been a huge asset to the legalization movement. We do what we can when we can. Our focus is making music and playing shows. I never cared much for politics.
SG: How will you be spending your 4/20?
BX: We’re playing a concert on 4/20 at the Fox Theatre in Pomona, CA and getting blasted!
You can also catch Kottonmouth Kings on April 22 at the House of Blues in San Diego, and on April 23 at Rock The Block in Las Vegas with Everlast and Big B.
