Ari-Up (born Ariane Forster, 1962), of the highly influential and 100% original all-girl punk rock / reggae band The Slits, sadly died today (Wednesday, Oct 20th).

Her mother, Nora Forster, and stepfather, John Lydon, released the following statement.

John and Nora have asked us to let everyone know that Nora’s daughter Arianna (aka Ari-Up) died today (Wednesday, October 20th) after a serious illness. She will be sadly missed.

Though inactive for many years, Ari-Up and The Slits released their first album in 25 years in October, 2009. The release of the CD, Trapped Animal (Narnack Records), also marked 30th anniversary of the band’s debut album, Cut (Island Records), which featured the band’s seminal single, “Typical Girls.”
