To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, vintage style icon Dita Von Teese has put her own twist on the world’s favorite Mexican cocktail. As a spokesperson for Cointreau, the drink naturally includes the orange liqueur (Cointreau is a triple sec produced in Angers, France). But there’s also some more unlikely ingredients which give it a kick and a contrasting demure floral note.
- 1 1/2 oz Cointreau
- 1 1/2 oz Silver Tequila
- 1 oz Fresh Lime Juice
- 1/2 oz Monin Rose Syrup
- 1 pinch Chipotle Spice
Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously. Pour into a chilled Margarita glass and garnish with floating organic yellow rose petals. For an added kick, add a chipotle and salt rim.
We also like the look of Dita’s chic signature cocktail, the extremely elegant Cointreau Teese – a drink “with a violet heart, enveloped in Cointreau.”
- 1 1/2 oz Cointreau
- 1/2 oz Apple juice
- 1 oz Monin Violet Syrup
- 3/4 oz Fresh lemon juice
Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously. Serve in martini glass with ginger frosted around the rim.
We first heard about this third deluxe cocktail when we interviewed Dita in Dec 2009. During our conversation, she mentioned that she was partial to a simply divine sounding drink she referred to as “Violet Champagne” – something she was introduced to in Paris by her friend, the bespoke corsetiere Mr. Pearl. When Dita subsequently called in to SG Radio we pressed her for more details.
“Mr. Pearl always brings me violets when they’re in season, ” she told us. “He’s really obsessed with violets. He taught me about violet Champagne. Rose Champagne is very nice too. You can do the same thing with a rose liqueur and it’s very nice, rose-scented Champagne.”
- 1 oz Monin Violet or Rose Syrup
- Champagne
Pour the floral syrup into the bottom of a frosted flute. Fill to just below the rim with Champagne.
Dita will be bringing several of her signature tableaus to life – including the decadent Opium Den set – at The Roxy on Sunset on May 17 and 18 for her Strip Strip Hooray! authentic burlesque cabaret. She will be performing two shows each night (7 PM and 10 PM), and will be joined by special guests Raja (from Season 3 of Rupaul’s Drag Race), Lada (of The Crazy Horse, Paris), Perle Noire, Diamondback Annie, and emcee Murray Hill. Tickets costs $35 plus booking, and are available via Ticketweb.
