Facebook are rolling out a new privacy option with regards to information sharing program they’re developing called Instant Personalization. The function is set to enable by default, so it’s important to understand what it does so you can make an informed decision as to what to do about it.

Instant Personalization will allow third parties such as Bing, TripAdvisor, Rotten Tomatoes, Pandora and Yelp to access your Facebook info to customize your online experience. However, when enabled, it’ll also allow your friends who visit these sites to see the stuff you like and dislike, and the reviews and comments you’ve posted.

In theory, this may be a good thing, since it might be helpful to get film, restaurant and hotel recommendations from your peer group. However, the downside is that your boss that your felt pressured to friend on Facebook could see that you spent your recent sick day – which also suspiciously coincided with National Nude Day (July 14 – for those who are curious) – at a naturist resort that you found via TripAdvisor that was so awesome you felt compelled to post a review on it.

Anyhow, if you think that Instant Personalization may not be for you (consider that Facebook may also add all kinds of third party partners at a later date) be sure to uncheck enable ASAP. The Instant Personalization option can be found by hitting Account, then Privacy Settings – you’ll find it in the Apps & Websites section.
