About Jonathan Bates / Big Black Delta

Jonathan moved to Miami, Florida from Venezuela when he was 7. At 17 he went to the Berklee College of Music in Boston. In late 2000, he quit school and couched surfed in Los Angeles – all because a lovely young lady bought him a drink, something that never happened in Boston. Jon started a band called Mellowdrone that put out several EPs independently and an LP on Columbia.

After going broke making the last Mellowdrone record, Jon needed a long break from the “band” aesthetic and needed to create something for no reason other than to cure boredom and expand consciousness – thus Big Black Delta came into being.

He bought a used laptop from his close friend Alessandro Cortini (NIN, SONOIO) and began sound designing and circuit bending to make original, simple music. By doing everything slightly “wrong” in the studio, Jon was trying to make music that “wasn’t bound by gravity…truly…”

“If you didn’t have our standard pop music as a reference, what would your pop music sound like? Would it have guitars? Drums? Voices? Without outside influence, what would it sound like?” This train of thought, combined with Jon’s other favorite dinner table conversation, UFO folklore, makes for a (hopefully) stimulating starting point for neural synapses or to get laid.

In addition to working on Big Black Delta, Jon recently collaborated with M83 on a remix of Daft Punk’s track “Fall” (off the Tron soundtrack). He has also co-produced and mixed the tracks “Mountaineer” and “Ladykiller” for White Sea, a new solo project by Morgan Kibby of M83, with whom Jon plays and writes.
