The leather dilemma is a contentious one for vegans. Many new vegans, upon “making the switch,” worry whether they’re expected to throw away their pre-vegan leather items – belts, shoes, jackets – and buy vegan alternatives. Many old vegans, myself included, break vegan belt after vegan belt and wonder whether we’re expected to keep buying crappy vinyl each year until the day we die.
Isn’t that wasteful? Doesn’t that go against the spirit of veganism? Yes, probably, and creating more trash is just the cherry on the top of the consumer culture cupcake. Furthermore, vinyl, as a synthetic substance, won’t – common sense informs us – biodegrade as easily as an organic like leather would. So if vegans are such environmentalists, what’s the solution?

Trikoton has stepped up the game when it comes to self-expression and individuality in fashion. The Berlin-based fashion house has found a unique way to reflect your personality in their clothing. The company uses the sound of your speech as source code for designs that are then woven into their high-tech knit garments.

“Don’t wear white after Labor Day.” Not only is it the stupidest rule of fashion ever written, it’s also the most outdated. Forget what your Grandmother told you. White is hot all year round and it’s also the easiest way to make a vintage wardrobe feel a little more modern. Add some crisp white and it always brings a sleek edge to whatever you are wearing.
Hours spent researching WHY this ever became a rule of fashion in the first place kept leading me back to one main reason: season. White deflects sunlight, therefore white is not warm enough to wear in the winter. I call B.S. To wear white in the winter simply wear heavier fabrics or knits, solid shoes or boots rather than strappy sandals, or pair lightweight garments with heavier garments like cardigans or woolly tights. Stick with heavy cotton, wool, cashmere, down, leather and most other natural fibers for the best protection from the elements.
I am, of course, biased towards vintage clothing so I pulled together a few examples of extra cute white vintage garments for you to check out.

I’m sure we can all agree that the best part of going back to school is shopping for your Back To School Clothing. Just one little completed outfit can offer the promise of new beginnings, new memories, new friends, new loves….
My years of “going back to school” are behind me, but I still like to live vicariously through window shopping the internet a little bit every day. Keeping in mind the requirements of school clothing (ie: comfort, style, personality, individuality, and a dash of modesty), I scoured my favorite website for vintage clothing, Etsy.com, and put together a few Back to School outfits in a few different looks.

I get this question a lot in my line of work. Over the past 10 years that I’ve spent buying and re-selling vintage I’ve come up with a very simple answer to this question: Why limit yourself? A wise woman once said, “There are some questions that should be answered with a counter-question.” This is definitely one of those questions.
Why limit yourself to what? A number of things. Why limit yourself to mass produced mall clothing? Why limit yourself to current trends? Why limit yourself to one look? One decade? One style? With vintage clothing, the possibilities are totally endless. My personal closet is as varied as it comes. One day I can be a sweet 70’s flower child, the next a sexy Russian spy. One day I’ll dress 50’s, the next; 20’s. Most often I just go for a sort of modern eclectic look by incorporating vintage pieces in with contemporary ones. Sky’s the limit, innit.

Holy 80’s Fashion Comeback, Batman! There are a few things in life that are inevitable: death, taxes and the cycle of fashion. And we’ve come full circle, folks. In receiving this month’s issue of Nylon, I have discovered that we have indeed reached the Mecca of 80’s trends (for better or worse).
