Gus Van Sant has made many films which have become touchstones for generations such as Drugstore Cowboy, Good Will Hunting and Elephant. His latest one, Last Days, tackles the early ’90’s by doing a fictional story of the last three days of Kurt Cobain’’s life.

The Cobain-like character [played by Michael Pitt] wanders around his desolate property inviting in Mormons and salesmen to say whatever they want to him while he grunts. The various supporting characters drift in and out of the film almost like dreams. Last Days chronicles the story of a man who has everything but is very depressed.

To music purists nothing is scarier than when a legendary artist embraces new technology. I still talk to people who think Bob Dylan lost it when he went electric. Certainly DJ Sasha surprised everyone and angered many when he decided that he was going to be doing his live shows using the Ableton Live software with a custom-built Maven midi controller and an Apple G4 laptop. SG got a chance to talk with Sasha about using those tools to play live and how it affected his new album, Fundacion NYC.

We last had the folks from OccupyLA in the SG Radio studio on October 6th, 2011. Since then, a lot has happened for them – and the Occupy movement as a whole.

Back then, OccupyLA’s occupation of the grounds outside City Hall was barely a week old, and no one had much idea of what the future might hold. Certainly few outsiders would have predicted they’d be alive and kicking seven months on.

Though they lost their permanent encampment in early December, 2011, after a brutal police raid, you can’t evict an idea – and OccupyLA had a big one – to mark International Workers’ Day with a massive day of action.

The resolution, which was first tabled by members of OccupyLA in a General Assembly (GA) held in November 2011, was taken up by other occupations nationwide, and on May 1st thousands of people in well over 100 cities participated in the May Day General Strike.

In Los Angels, the day was marked with marches from the 4 Winds in the North, South, East, and West corners of the sprawling metropolis, which converged with other immigrant/workers rights protests in Downtown LA. A special OccupyLA May Day GA was then held in the evening in Pershing Square, where it all began.

By sundown, Pershing Square was packed, with many new and perspective occupiers experiencing a GA for the first time. The overwhelming sense of camaraderie emitted by the large crowd was palpable, as strangers were quickly united by a common goal and the process of radical and truly representative democracy.

The momentum of the movement (that most in the mainstream seriously underestimate) continues as the focus shifts to Chicago, with large gatherings and protests planned in honor of the People’s Summit, NATO, and the (hastily relocated) G8.

On Sunday, as OccupyLA encamps in the SuicideGirls Radio studio, we’ll be reflecting on May Day, celebrating the many triumphs of the movement, and talking about its future hopes, dreams, and grounded, pragmatic and attainable goals.

When one talks about the greats in movie music composing the name Danny Elfman invariably comes up. His collaborations with Sam Raimi, Gus Van Sant and the creation of The Simpsons’ unmistakable theme song have made his name synonymous with great works.

However, it’’s his collaborations with visionary director Tim Burton that has brought him his most acclaim. From his starring role in The Nightmare Before Christmas to his Oscar nominated score for Big Fish, their names have been eternally linked.

Now they have collaborated again on the score and original songs for Tim Burton’’s Corpse Bride. Not only did Elfman create a wonderful and romantic score but he wrote and sang one of the best songs in the film, “Remains of the Day,” as the skeleton man Bonejangles.

During the time I’ve known Eric Victorino and Giovanni Giusti, I’ve had some of the best nights of my life. Giovanni is from my hometown – a small suburb a stones throw away from the lively, honest and culture rich city of San Francisco, where we attended the same small town high school. I met him while living in Oakland with an old boyfriend of mine. Both of them studied sound engineering at a local college. Giovanni would endlessly pound away on his beat machine, day in and day out. To this day, he hasn’t changed a bit; I can’t say the same for many people from our small town, which has become seemingly plagued with tragedy and wasted youth, drug addiction, suicide, and reckless destruction in general.

I met Eric, the other essential half of the Limousines at a music video shoot for their song “The Future.” Instantly he fascinated me with his delicate prose, even during a simple conversation. What struck me most was his kind spirit. Eric and Giovanni have an auteur theory if you will, their medium being words and melody. Unlike so many peers in our society of constraint, boundaries and bullshit, they aren’t afraid to say what they think, or communicate simple and empirical observations of the natural world.

Right now Eric and Giovanni are touring Europe with The Sounds, so I jumped at the opportunity to pick their brains and hit on them in the most subtle of ways. This is what transpired…
