About The Dread Crew of Oddwood

The Dread Crew of Oddwood is a folk metal band known for its pirate-themed music played exclusively on acoustic instruments. They have dubbed this unique style as Heavy Mahogany.

Over the past 6 years The Dread Crew of Oddwood has independently booked 8 national tours, performing at over 70 venues throughout the U.S. and Canada. In early 2015, they supported Alestorm and Swashbuckle on their quest for hooks and booty on Piratefest North America. This crew of bearded brigands packs bars and concert halls with rabid fans that flock to experience a headbanging, jig-dancing, pirate-filled adventure. Locally, they’ve directly supported the bands Turisas, Firewind, Rhapsody of Fire, Arkona, Heidevolk, Stolen Babies, Buckethead, and Steam Powered Giraffe.

By infusing the raw energy of heavy metal with Celtic folk music, The Dread Crew of Oddwood’s Heavy Mahogany style has carved a distinct and popular niche in the heavy metal community. They riff and shred on the accordion, mandolin, bouzouki, tin whistle, toy piano, acoustic guitar, upright bass, and “Oddkit”, while weaving grandiose tales of comrades lost, bloody sieges, drunken debauchery, zombies, airships, and time travel! The Dread Crew of Oddwood recently finished recording their latest acoustic monstrosity ‘Lawful Evil’ which was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter and is set for release in March 2016.

ICYMI: You can watch our show feat. Jared James Nichols here or in the player below.

About Jared James Nichols

You can’t teach the blues. It’s not something that can be codified in music books or learned on YouTube. It goes much deeper than that and it comes from the inside. It’s about the way the guitar strings are bent and the sound gets transmuted directly from a player’s soul. It’s simple: at the end of the day, either you’ve got it, or you don’t. Jared James Nichols has definitely got it. The Wisconsin-born, Los Angeles-based singer, writer and guitarist’s new LP Old Glory & The Wild Revival channels blues grit and gusto through bombastic arena-size rock ‘n’ roll. It’s raw, raucous and righteously real.

As soon as he got his first guitar at 14-years-old, the stage immediately called to Jared. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that he grew up minutes away from The Alpine Valley Resort — where Stevie Ray Vaughan performed his last show. However, no divine coincidence could truly foreshadow just how adept at the six-string he would eventually become. He personally traces the beginning of his story back to a blues jam that his mother brought him to.

“Two weeks after I got an electric guitar, I was on stage with all of these old cats from Chicago playing the blues,” he recalls with a smile. “The music immediately resonated with me. It was all about the feeling and the soul behind it. None of these guys were music nerds. They were true blues guys playing what they felt. That power and reality struck a chord in me.”

Soon, he found himself practicing for twelve hours every day. Hitting up the local jams, he ended up sharing the stage with legends including Buddy Guy, “Honeyboy” Edwards, and “Big Jim” Johnson as well as opening for Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Derek Trucks. By his 21st birthday, he had logged over 500 gigs. After a short stint at Berklee School of Music in Boston, he headed out to Los Angeles where he garnered numerous accolades at the world-renowned Musicians Institute, winning the 2010 Jerry Horton guitar contest, the 2011 Les Paul tribute contest, and the 2011 “Outstanding Guitarist” award. 2012 saw him release his debut EP, Live at the Viper Room, gaining the notice of both Guitar World and Guitar Player and inking a deal with Sony/MTV’s Hype Music Publishing. However, everything simply laid the groundwork for Old Glory & The Wild Revival.

Teaming up with Aerosmith engineer Warren Huart, Jared began working on the tunes in early 2013. Honing his voice as a guitarist, songs like the first single “Let It Go” speak through a delta-style soul with the right amount of rock bravado. “That one is a blues rock song about love and give and take,” he reveals. “It’s got its own style and it opens the door to what I’m doing”. In addition to Huart, “classic rock legend” Eddie Kramer (Hendrix, Humble Pie) has come aboard for new tracks.

Elsewhere on the LP, “Blackfoot” charges forward with a riff as sharp as a tomahawk and a whole lot of spirit punctuated by Jessica Childress of The Voice’s backing harmonies. “In Wisconsin, I was surrounded by Indian reservations and culture,” he continues. “I’d do casino and reservation tours as a kid. When I wrote the song, I was reading about all of these badass tribes. I love that spirit and vibe inherent in Native American culture. The Blackfoot were truly bad motherfuckers. That lick is what I feel their culture represented.”

On stage, it truly comes to life with his power trio rounded out by the Swedish born Rhythm Section of Eriik Sandin (Bass) & Dennis Holm (drums). Jared’s presence becomes amplified with guitar in hand. Audiences have experienced that everywhere from his performances at NAMM and SXSW to the iconic Sturgis Buffalo Chip Festival where he’s played twice alongside ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Kid Rock and the Harley-Davidson 110th Anniversary in Milwaukee to his first venture across Europe and the UK this past summer.

Ultimately, he lives up to that idea of Revival in the album’s title. “I want people to get excited,” he concludes. “I want them to feel like anything is possible in this music. I want them to know great blues rock exists. If I can give someone the same inspiration I was blessed with, I’ve done something right.”

**UPDATE**

ICYMI: Watch this week’s hilarious show feat. Robbie Furze of The Big Pink here or in the player below.

About Robbie Furze | The Big Pink

Robbie Furze and Milo Cordell formed The Big Pink in 2007. Although both of music stock, their debut, A Brief History of Love, was the first collection of songs that either were really able call their own. Both from London, the genetics of The Big Pink are not incidental. Milo, the son of 1960s producer Denny Cordell, is behind the celebrated Merok label, instrumental in unleashing the mutant soul of Crystal Castles, Salem, and Teengirl Fantasy upon the world, while Furze first made a name for himself playing with industrial behemoths Panic DHH and Alec Empire. Such disparate roots speak loudly of the ambitions of The Big Pink, as they pull unexpected and marginal forms into the spotlight of a wider audience.

Having released a low-key single on unknown independent House Anxiety in 2008, the band’s rising star drew the attention of 4AD, penning a worldwide deal with the label in early 2009. Ignoring the pressure that befits such music industry hype, the band eloped to the Electric Lady Studios in New York to record and self-produce what was to become their epic debut album, A Brief History of Love. The final results were eleven stunning tracks set within a sound world that combines melody and beautiful abstract noise in a manner redolent of their eclectic musical backgrounds.

Having toured the world throughout 2009 and the early part of the new decade, the band took a break to reconvene, with their only new release in 2010 a mix tape as part of the renowned K7! mix series. The Big Pink’s second album, Future This, was released in January, 2012. Named after a skateboard company’s slogan from the ‘80s, it’s an apt title. Recorded over the summer of 2011, with ideas flowing, they worked with producer Paul Epworth (Adele, Florence & The Machine, Friendly Fires) to help them match their high ambitions. The end result is a perfect realization of the band’s initial intentions to marry their more outre influences with a pop sensibility. The 10 tracks add more shades to The Big Pink palette, commanding attention throughout with its genius gently sinking in like all good records should. The band are currently in Los Angeles working on their third studio album.

An incredible evening of live music and conversation with Lili Haydn. We covered puberty, how to find your inner funk, the importance of embracing your intuition, Anita Hill and the roots of feminism, and the civil rights movement from Martin Luther King, Jr. to #BlackLivesMatter! Watch it here or via the player below.

About Lili Haydn

Referred to as the “Jimi Hendrix of the violin,” Lili Haydn astounds with her fiery and virtuosic music and vocals. A distinguished singer, songwriter, composer and violinist, Haydn has released four critically acclaimed albums as a solo artist and has collaborated with legendary artists such as Herbie Hancock, Sting, Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, the LA Philharmonic, and George Clinton, to name a few.

After a successful first solo album, Lili Haydn experienced a major setback. She had just moved into her Los Angeles home when she began to notice a decline in her physical and mental health. Unaware of what caused this sudden change, Haydn spent months with various experts to figure out the cause of her illness.

Engineers discovered the presence of the pesticide Chlordane in the foundation of the house. The pesticide had spread into Haydn’s heating and air conditioning ducts, contaminating the entire house. The musician had been suffering from toxic inebriation for months and struggled to find a cure for her significant loss of brain function. She tried everything from drug detoxes to monthly sauna sessions, but nothing worked.

When she eventually regained her health, Haydn remained committed to educating the public on the positive effects of music on the brain through a series of lectures on TEDx Talks, NPR, and other speaking engagements. See one of her TedxTalk here!

Since her recovery, Haydn has scored numerous feature films and recorded her latest album, Lililand. Her most recent full-length release is an entirely improvised collaboration with composer and pianist Bill Goldstein called Evocations.

For more on Lili Haydn visit her website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channel and catch a very special performance on Friday, November 6th at The Grand Annex in Downtown San Pedro, CA. Tickets are available here.

About Paradise Kitty

You can’t call yourself a rock & roll fan unless you have grabbed a cold one, kicked up your heels, closed your eyes and dove head first into Guns ‘N’ Roses’ masterpiece Appetite for Destruction. If you are a REAL rock fan, I can guarantee that you have done this more times than you can count and you quite possibly lost your virginity to it as well. Selling over 18 million copies, Appetite has become the soundtrack to some of the best times of our crazy lives.

Paradise Kitty is an LA based band of five girls who grew up loving Guns ‘N’ Roses. Listening alone couldn’t satiate these kittens. They decided to pay musical homage to the infamous sunset strip kings. When Pri (lead guitarist) contacted Rachael Rine (drummer) about putting together a G’N’R tribute band, they agreed they had to find the best match for each player. They needed girls who could really cop the unique swagger and feel of Axl, Slash, Duff, Izzy, and Steven. They found exactly what they were looking for in Caroline Cirone (bass) and Hisako Ozawa (guitar). With Jenna Syde (vocals) leading the helm, these kitties are ready to kick in your door, blow off your roof, start a riot, and vandalize your hearts. Welcome to the jungle of Paradise Kitty. This is your proper invitation, also consider it your official warning.

‪Talking of invitations, Friday‬ September 4th is the kick off for Paradise Kitty’s residency at the Viper Room. To compliment the ladies, there’s a stellar line up; the Guns ‘N’ Roses-loving kittens will be sharing the stage with Black Lodge, MURSIC and Ithica. Doors open at 8 PM, with Paradise Kitty scheduled to hit the stage at 11:30 PM. The ladies will be jamming the best Guns N’ Roses tunes with special guest players until closing time. Use the promo code “PussyCat” to get in for half off!!!
