graffiti noun : (1) a key indication of poverty, language of the people, costly vandalism, the most prevalent medium of art in the world, landmarks for violence, an expression that transcends the false constructs of race, and yet another segment of black culture to be appropriated, and at the same time demonized, by the white majority in America. (2) unauthorized writing or drawing on a public surface.
Growing up outside east Denver, I remember helping clean graffiti off the side of the church my family attended. It was back soon after we tried to wash it off the first time, and the second. After a while, we stopped doing anything about it.
I didn’t always like graffiti, but it always interested me. The act of carving one’s name on the surface of something physical, in secret, somewhere someone would see it someday – it’s primal, but a sign of self-reflection, intelligence even.

SuicdeGirls presents the fifth installment of our Fiction Friday sci-fi series, Marco and the Red Granny, which is brought to you by SG columnist Mighty Mur a.k.a. cyber commentator Mur Lafferty.
Marco and the Red Granny is set in a not-so-distant future where an alien species, the Li-Jun, has transformed the moon into the new artistic center of the universe, where the Sally Ride Lunar Base soon gains the nickname “Mollywood.” These aliens can do amazing things with art and the senses, allowing a painting, for example, to stimulate senses other than sight.
In the previous installments, Marco, a writer whose career has long been in the doldrums, gets a surprise call from an agent he thought he no longer had, informing him that he had received an offer from Mollywood for a much coveted Li-Jun patronage. Keen to catch up career-wise with his ex-GF Penelope, who’d unceremoniously dumped him after being recruited by the Li-Jun two years earlier, Marco jumps on the next shuttle to the moon. Once aboard, he finds himself sitting next to a seemingly unassuming old lady called Heather, who turns out to be The Red Granny, a legend in Li-Jun’s reality show world for being a three-time champion of The Most Dangerous Game (which requires contestants to sign away the rights to their life).
We join Marco shortly after he lands on the Moon, as he settles into his new accommodations at House Blue. After a brief meeting with his new patron, a Li-Jun called Thirteen, Marco realizes he’s never been shown the terms of his employment. A sense of unease sets in as he prepares for the evening’s designated entertainment – a trip to see The Most Dangerous Game…

Heartbreak. It happens to everyone, and people deal with it in different ways. I remember the first time I ever felt it, the impossible sadness and emptiness that just washes over your body in a wave when someone decides they don’t want you anymore. I was in high school, having dinner with my family and the phone rang. He always called around that time. We talked for hours every night. That night was different.
“You didn’t see this coming?” He asked. “L, school’s over. I want to be free for the summer.” I hung up the phone, wanting to scream and cry, throw the phone through the window…but I stayed silent. I swallowed it all, and in that moment I decided that that’s how I would get by. I walked calmly back to the dinner table, smiled and carried on. My parents never even knew anything was wrong. Inside, I was crushed and angry, outside, I was calm, cool and collected.
I didn’t date anyone else for two years, but eventually high school ended and college was a new start. I met someone, and it was a fairy tale. I still consider myself lucky to have known anything like that. It ended well enough, looking back, but it took me another solid two years to get passed that one as well. After we agreed to call it quits I just wanted to give up. It couldn’t be over, but it was, and it was next to impossible to move on. But, after college, just as before, I did move on. The next guy and I dated on and off for a few years as well. He was different then the rest. He was a bit controlling, but I was all too ready to accept the roll of housewife after spending the last few years drinking my face off in dark bars. I didn’t go out, just came home after work, crawled into bed, and loved him with everything I had. My friends didn’t trust him; I thought they were crazy.

SuicideGirls caught up with William Shatner when he materialized on the black carpet at Revolver Magazine’s Golden Gods Awards last week. The OG Star Trekker‘s far out level of badass quotient was being acknowledged with an Honorary Headbanger Award, which was presented to him by SG’s own Food Coma columnist Scott Ian (who was there with his band Anthrax ahead of the monster Big 4 Fest).
Shatner is planning to follow up his critically acclaimed albums* The Transformed Man (1968) and Has Been (2004), with a third full length entitled Searching For Major Tom, which is scheduled to be unleashed on the world later this year.
Given that we were at the Golden Gods, which is a celebration of all things hard ‘n’ heavy, we had to ask Mr. Shatner if his release would include any metal tracks. He responded in the affirmative, and revealed that the collection of out-of-this-world covers will include Black Sabbath’s “Iron Man,” Pink Floyd’s “Learning To Fly,” and Deep Purple’s “Space Trucking.”
“There are some great musicians are on there,” Shatner enthused. Among the many guests confirmed are ex-Deep Purple guitarist and Rainbow frontman Ritchie Blackmore (who makes “Space Oddity” even more of an oddity), Peter Frampton (the not-dead-yet legend plays guitar on “Spirit In The Sky”), Edgar Froese of Tangerine Dream (who brings the weirdness on “Learning To Fly” to new heights), Kinks’ guitarist and frontman Dave Davies (who takes quirky to Mach 10 on “Mr. Spaceman”) and Stokes’ guitarist Nick Valensi (who is a grounding influence on “Major Tom”).
“It’s fabulous,” said Shatner. “I mean, it’s a happening. I can’t wait to see what the reaction will be.”
