About Zak Waters

Los Angeles native Zak Waters has been shaking the dance floors across the country with his impressive and ambitious solo work since 2011. Now the singer, songwriter, producer and DJ is gearing up to release his highly-anticipated first full-length album Lip Service via Spotify on September 9. In conjunction with the album release, Zak will bring his full live band to The Satellite in Los Angeles for a month-long free residency every Monday night beginning September 2.

At theses shows, he will highlight material from album Lip Service including the album’s first single “Penelope,” a catchy pop track Zak penned about a young man’s longing for his former babysitter. There’s also soul meets dreamy indie pop tracks like “Dear John” and “Sleeping In My T-shirt.” Also included on the album are previously released cuts “Runnin Around” and “Skinny Dipping In The Deep End.” Look for “Penelope” to debut August 27.

This week’s SuicideGirl Gamer of the Week is Toxic. Toxic loves nerds. Probably because she is one. She’s into Transformers and role-playing games, especially Final Fantasy. I spoke to her about some of her favorites and whether or not she would support a FFVII remake.

Toxic seems like an odd nickname for such a pretty girl. What made you choose it?

Honestly, Toxic wasn’t my original choice. I had a different name picked out that was totally girlie but it didn’t roll off the tongue like “Toxic Suicide” does. Toxic suits me though in more ways than one. Get to know me and you will see why!

Judging from the fact you have “Decepticon” tattooed across your ribs, I take it you are a fan of Transformers?

Don’t let my hot girl disguise fool you. I am just lying low until our leader Megatron collects enough energon cubes here on Earth. With the energy we acquire we can finally reconquer Cybertron and take down the autobots.

When did you get that tattoo anyway?

Wade Davidson at Raven Ink Tattoo tattooed “Decepticon” on my ribs the summer of 2011. I debated getting this tattoo for a long time. Originally I did not want a lot of tattoos…Wow has that changed! Being a Transformers fan since childhood, I can’t imagine not having a tribute to Saturday mornings of watching G1. I cannot believe I didn’t get it sooner. My tattoo always gets me attention from my favorite people to converse with NERDS! Fellow nerds like me! GOODNESS DO I LOVE NERDS!

Tell me about your other tattoos.

Where to start? We can start with my first tattoo. I have “Your Name” tattooed in a heart on my right butt check. Originally I wanted something small that could be easily covered. My heart was done by an artist named Steve O in Susanville, CA.

I have two full sleeves. Both of my sleeves are being done by Jason Iffert at Raven Ink Tattoo in Portland, OR. My right arm is a floral sleeve. It features many of my favorite flowers including a tiger lily and a sunflower. I also have a pinup witch of my mother on my right arm. The pin up is a contribution by Wade Davidson. My left arm is a sleeve of Dr. Seuss characters. All the characters from all my favorite books. There are two small pieces on my left wrist not part of the Seuss theme. I have a matching friendship tattoo on my inner left wrist with my BFF Britney. I also have a “Hedwig and the Angry Inch” piece done by artist John MacDonell.

On the back of my neck I have an owl I named “Dexter” by artist Tomma Mueller. I love Dexter– he has the body of a strawberry! Below that is my full back piece being done by Sharkbait Struckman at Mr. Tattoo in Milwaukie, OR. My full back piece is of the tree of knowledge with owls. This piece is my newest and I love how it is turning out so far. He is such an awesome artist!

Favorite transformer?

My favorite transformer is a hard subject because it’s so close between two: #1 is, and always will be, Megatron. Megatron is a ruthless leader who shows no mercy. #2 is Soundwave, not only because he talks in a cool robotic voice, but he has a cassette deck in his chest that popped out more Decepticons (Like Ravage and Laserbeak). Sooooo rad!

What are some of your favorite video games?

I am a sucker for the classics, especially RPGs, they are by far my favorite to play. My favorite game of all time has to be Final Fantasy VII on PS1, though. The storyline, characters, and summons, I can spend all day running around getting into battles to work up my materia and limit breaks. A close second favorite has to be Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past for Super NES. Best Zelda game ever hands down! I used to spend hours playing this game with my dad as a kid. When I finally beat it by myself it was a moment to remember… I mean I had the Triforce in my little Link hands!

Other games I really enjoy playing Final Fantasy VIII (PS1), Donkey Kong Country 1-3 (Super NES), Kingdom Hearts (PS2), Street Fighter II (Super NES), Mortal Kombat (I play it in the arcade), Eternal Champions (Sega), Tomb Raider (PS1), Legend of Legia (PS1), Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega), Tetris (NES), Duckhunt (NES), and of course Super Mario Bros. (NES). I like pretty much every Mario but especially love the original 1-3.

Preferred system?

I really love my Wii because I can download classic games and play them on my console. I have so many amazing games downloaded into it. Thank God because my NES is to the point where you blow hard and they still aren’t playing!

What about least favorite game? Ever played one that just absolutely sucked?

There is one game that I like but I am terrible at it – Altered Beast which I played on Sega Genesis. I was really good at it when I was a little kid but now I can’t even make it past level two. I strive for improvement though. Besides that I am not a big fan of shooting games. I’ve tried them and they aren’t really my thing.

If you could compare yourself to one video game character, who would it be and why?

I am totally Yuffie Kisaragi from FFVII. When my brother and I used to play we always gave her character my name. For one, Yuffie is a babe with a big personality just like me. She is a very sassy, feisty, and headstrong. I like to compare myself to her good traits because I am definitely not a Materia thief. The best part about Yuffie is she is a ninja just like me!

Did you get a Gold Chocobo and all that?

Yes, I obtained the Gold Chocobo. So much racing, breeding, and gil spent. It’s a long and grueling task but is necessary! Trust me you want the “Knights of the round” Summon especially in the “weapons” and final battles. The way you get it is with the Gold Chocobo. I just started a new FFVII game a while ago and am at the Chocobo side quest yet again. Got to have a game night soon so I can tackle it.

Which was harder in your opinion, Ruby or Emerald Weapon?

They are both pretty tough battles but if your equipped well and have the “Knights of the Round” Materia it makes it a lot easier. I would have to say though Ruby is harder than Emerald weapon, though.

Do you think Sony should remake FFVII in high definition for PS3 or leave the game alone?

I am usually one to say don’t mess with the classics but I wouldn’t mind playing a revamped version of FFVII. It would look so pretty on my LED TV. Only condition though is no major changes to the game/storyline and it keeps its integrity.

This past Thursday July 27th on SuicideGirls Radio, hosts Nicole Powers and Juturna Suicide were joined by FIVE amazing bands as they previewed some of the awesome talent featured on next weekend’s Sunset Strip Music Festival.

Amir Derakh and Anthony “Fu’ Valcic from Julien-K, Josh Boardman and Stephen Bannister from Battle Tapes, Matthew Stolarz and Johnty Thompson from The Active Set, Will Love of Sabrosa Purr, and Andy Clockwise all stopped by the studio to party with the ladies, and partake in the odd beer or three. As you can imagine, with so much booze and so many boyz, things got a little wild and outrageous amounts of fun was had by all. Witness the good times and great music in the player above!

Back in the early ’80s, Adam Ant was the king of the wild post-punk frontier. Mentored by former Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren and his fashion designer partner Vivienne Westwood, the London born art school dropout created a visually vivid world of pirates and dandies which brought color back to the palate of a culturally monotone and economically depressed UK.

Having amassed an avid US fanbase with his music, and after starring in a critically acclaimed West End production of the Joe Orton play Entertaining Mr. Sloane, Ant moved to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. However the price of fame took its toll. Alongside film and TV roles, he also aquired a stalker, which severely impacted his already fragile peace of mind.

Taking a break from the public eye, Ant moved to Tennessee before returning to London, where an altercation outside a pub thrust him back into the headlines again. Following the incident, Ant pled guilty to a single count of causing an affray. Having been diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 21, Ant received a suspended sentence and court ordered psychiatric care. Unfortunately, due to the relentless nature of the British press, he was forced to pull his life back together under the tabloid glare.

Though his recovery was very public and far from linear – with every setback being exacerbated by its salacious documentation by the less savory contingent of the UK press – Ant is clearly in a much better place these days. He completed a string of dates in the US and Europe in 2012, before releasing his first studio album in 17 years. The intriguingly titled Adam Ant Is The Blueblack Hussar in Marrying The Gunner’s Daughter was released on both side of the Atlantic in January of this year.

SuicideGirls caught up with Ant by phone after a rehearsal with his new band The Good, The Mad & The Lovely Posse to talk about his new album and his upcoming US tour, which kicks off in San Diego on July 17th.

About Cross My Heart Hope to Die

Cross My Heart Hope to Die (@cmhxhtd) will change your perceptions of art and challenge your expectations of music. CMHHTD transcends musical boundaries – the music exists as just one part of a larger project, ever evolving. At its foundation, this collective balances tangible art with striking visuals and an all encompassing soundtrack to create a total experience – each element as important as the other.

The sound system is the spark caused by the collision of producers DJ Muggs (@DJ_Muggs) and Andrew Kline. DJ Muggs is best known as a founding member of the multi platinum rap group, Cypress Hill, as well as the producer of such hits as Ice Cube’s “Check Yo Self” and House of Pain’s “Jump Around.” The Grammy nominated producer has created remixes for U2 and Depeche Mode, and collaborated with UK trip hop artist, Tricky, on the album Juxtapose. Andrew Kline is a founding member and main songwriter of the Los Angeles based hardcore band, Strife. With a career spanning more than 20 years, Strife is heralded to be one of the most influential and defining hardcore bands of the 90’s. As a music producer, Andrew has worked with artists over a wide range of genres and has recently added video directing to his repertoire. Muggs and Kline, though from different musical backgrounds, share a love of a dark, cinematic music and the fusion of their talents creates something you would not expect.

This sound is complemented by the ethereal songstress, Brevi, who elevates the tracks with her sexy and hauntingly beautiful vocals. The attentive listener may recognize her from tracks with such musical veterans as 50 Cent, Wiz Khalifa, Xzibit, Raekwon from the Wu Tang Clan, and more – though CMHHTD puts her in a spotlight like never before.

Sean Bonner (@seanbonner) adds an additional, indefinable piece to what is already a bit of an enigma. Sean is a hacker and curator who commands a noteworthy online network. With a history in both fine art and music, he helps to shape the public face and feel of this project, and his involvement is sure to blur the lines between fans and collaborators, audience and participant.

The first traditional release from Cross My Heart Hope To Die, a self titled EP, was released on April 2nd on Alpha Pup Records. The interactive art side of this collective, however, has been prolific and manifesting itself on the streets for close to a year. Unsuspecting pedestrians around the world have been enjoying and participating in this project – sometimes without even knowing it. Inconspicuous art installations and street music boxes have been hidden in such cities as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Rome, Belfast, Prague, and Vienna. CMHHTD wants to manipulate the way people find music; to bring back the thrill of discovery. Something sorely needed in a digital age where we are constantly bombarded with aural stimulation.

Upcoming gallery exhibitions and a series of videos shot all over the world make it obvious that Cross My Heart Hope To Die is much more than just another musical project. Their actual scope escapes clear definition.
